Product overview
Tuta (formerly Tutanota) is an end-to-end encrypted email service operated by Tutao GmbH, a company founded in 2011 in Hanover, Germany. The service covers email, calendar and contacts, with all data encrypted so that even Tuta itself cannot read user content. Tuta uses its own encryption protocol, TutaCrypt, which since 2024 includes quantum-resistant algorithms based on CRYSTALS-Kyber alongside traditional elliptic curve cryptography. Users can send encrypted emails to non-Tuta recipients through a shared password mechanism. The service runs on apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, plus a web client. All data is stored on Tuta's own servers in ISO 27001 certified data centers in Germany. The company runs entirely on renewable energy and publishes its client code as open source on GitHub. Tuta reports over 10 million users and more than 10,000 business customers, including human rights organizations and financial institutions. A permanent free plan provides 1 GB of storage. Paid personal plans start at 3 EUR per month (Revolutionary, 20 GB) and go up to 8 EUR per month (Legend, 500 GB). Business plans range from 6 to 12 EUR per month per user. KEY FEATURES: - End-to-end encrypted email, calendar and contacts with zero-knowledge architecture - Post-quantum encryption via TutaCrypt protocol (CRYSTALS-Kyber + X25519) - Encrypted emails to external recipients via shared passwords - Own servers in ISO 27001 certified data centers in Germany - Open source client code published on GitHub
