Product overview
OpenTalk is an open-source video conferencing platform built in Rust by OpenTalk GmbH, a Berlin subsidiary of the Heinlein Group (operator of mailbox.org). Founded in 2021, it targets government, education, and enterprise users needing digital sovereignty and European data protection compliance. OpenTalk was the first video conferencing provider to receive the BSI IT Security Label from Germany's Federal Office for Information Security, and holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification. It runs in the browser with no installation, on a container-based Kubernetes architecture. Features include multi-moderator meetings, automatic speaker lists, and an audit-proof voting system with open and secret ballots for parliamentary and committee use. Additional tools include breakout rooms, shared whiteboards, GDPR-compliant recording with per-participant consent, phone dial-in, and live streaming. SSO works via Keycloak, and REST APIs connect to ownCloud, Nextcloud, and Univention. OpenTalk is deployed city-wide for Berlin and across the State of Thuringia. Infrastructure runs on Heinlein Group's own German servers powered by green energy, with no US cloud providers. The free plan supports 5 participants and 30-minute meetings. KEY FEATURES: - Audit-proof voting with open and secret ballots for parliamentary use - BSI IT Security Label and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification - Open-source Rust codebase on container-based Kubernetes - Hosted on Heinlein Group's own German servers (no US cloud) - Integrations with ownCloud, Nextcloud, and Univention via REST APIs
