Photoroom is a Paris-based AI photo editing app used mainly by e-commerce sellers, marketers, and small businesses to create professional product images without a photo studio. The core feature is instant background removal, which has expanded to include AI-generated backgrounds, shadow addition, scene expansion, and relighting. Users can batch-edit thousands of images at once, either through the app or via an API that plugs into existing workflows. Founded in 2019 by Matthieu Rouif (former GoPro product lead) and Eliot Andres, the company went through Y Combinator and has raised $64 million in total, including a $43 million Series B led by Balderton Capital at a $500 million valuation in 2024. Other investors include Aglaé Ventures (backed by the Arnault family) and Y Combinator. The team has around 100 employees. Photoroom processes over 5 billion images per year and has been downloaded more than 150 million times across 180 countries. The company trains its own foundation model, Photoroom Instant Diffusion, specifically optimized for product photography. Notable integrations include partnerships with Depop, Shopify, and Netflix. Warner Bros used Photoroom's API to build the viral Barbie selfie generator, which was shared over 1 million times. The app generates around 50 million euros in annual recurring revenue.
